So I was playing Dawn of War this weekend because I didn't any major St. Patrick's Day plans. Well, I did, but they fell through, and that's another story. Anyway, I was playing along, directing my forces against the Forces of Chaos in the name of the Immortal Emperor, when I made an observation: Space Marines have British accents, as do Chaos Marines, Orks, and Eldar. And the goddamn Imperial Guard. Then I got to thinking about what kinds of accents science fiction empires usually have...And you know what? They're almost all British!! Which other science fiction empire has British accents you ask? The Imperials for one!!! Sith always have British accents. All of the Imperial officers have more or less British accents. Hell, even most of the Rebels have British accents! Why is it that fictional empires have British accents? Even the Spartans in "300" had more than a hint of a British accent. And they're not even fictional!! More or less.
This begs the question: Is there some elaborate scheme to make British-English the language of the future, and space by extension? Are we being warned by a resistance movement that the British are plotting against the rest of us? It's entirely possible, and I'm paranoid enough to believe it. I advise you to stay on your guard against these forces of tyranny, oppression, and curry.
Stay tuned for more exciting, and possibly more coherent, posts later this week!
